I'm able to establish a dial-up connection but can't get any web pages to load.

The first thing you should do is walk through the Windows 95/98 Setup instructions and verify that your machine has all the proper settings. If your settings are configured properly and you are still unable to view any web pages then try the following:

  • Double click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop
  • Double click on the "Dial-up Networking" icon
  • Right click on the "First Internet" icon and choose "Properties"
  • Click on "Server Types"
  • Click on "TCP/IP Settings"
  • Set the second setting on "Specify Name Server Addresses"
  • Assign the following DNS numbers in the appropriate boxes
    • Primary DNS: 216.9.200.11
    • Secondary DNS: 216.9.200.12
    • Leave the primary and secondary WINS with all zeros
  • Click OK at the bottom of the window and close all other open windows
  • Restart the computer and try to dial in and get web pages again

I get a message that reads "Dial-up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network protocols you specified in the server types settings of the dial-up adapter" when trying to connect to First Internet.

I get a message that says "Dial-up networking could not negotiate a connection, check your password and try again" when trying to connect to First Internet.

The best thing to do in this situation is to re-enter both the username and password on the "Connect To" window prior to dialing up again. Windows will sometimes not send to the server what you see typed in those fields and re-entering it will fix this. If you re-enter both the username and password and still get the same message then you'll want to call customer service at (480) 839-1070 and have them verify that you're using the correct username and password and that your account is active.

I get a message that says "The computer you are dialing into is not answering" when trying to connect to First Internet.

This unfortunately happens from time to time due to the fact that we rely so heavily on the telephone company to provide service, and in the majority of cases it is out of our control. If you are getting this message the best thing to do is wait 15-20 minutes and then try dialing in again. Often times whatever is causing the problem will be cleared up by the phone company in a short time. If for some reason you wait and still get the message then the best thing to do is to call customer service at (480) 839-1070 and see if they have any details about the potential length of the outage, or potential temporary phone numbers you can use for dial-up access during that time.
